What they say: Has your child ever wondered what children in other countries eat? What they have for breakfast? What does their dinner smell like? How does it taste? Do they sit at a table?
Now your children can find out with The World in My Kitchen by Sally Brown and Kate Morris (co-devisors of Cbeebies’ I Can Cook), a global recipe book for kids packed with information about foods and the country they come from.
Countries include Finland, Morocco, Mauritius, Brazil, Mexico and Canada.
What we say: “Me and my 5 year old son were both excited when this book arrived. We started by looking through the book and all the fun information and pictures which was provided in relation to a number of different countries all over the world and what these countries offer, facts in relation to culture and traditions as well as foods they eat, as well as even some jokes!
The book gives the names of the dishes in both English and the language of the country of origin, which is a bonus. It includes salads, main dishes, appetizers, breads and desserts.
My son loved this and once we read about the countries, we looked through the simple and easy to understand recipes and he decided what he would like to make.
Before we chose a dish we checked the notes in the beginning of the book which explains to children the process and tools used when cooking and how to be organised, clean up after and prepare the ingredients. We found this very easy to understand.
We decided on Beef Kebabs from Peru. My son was able to follow the recipe and was impressed that he had cooked dinner for the family; we have a few other desserts which he wants to try over the summer holidays and found this book a nice way for him to start his interest in cooking and trying new foods.”
The World in My Kitchen is available from many good book stores and online from Amazon.
